Biological Environment Three basic intertidal systems: a
sheltered northern platform; an exposed southern platform; and a narrow
exposed eastern platform (Laxton & Laxton 1988c) Immediate vicinity of the outfall:
barnacles, Ulva and encrusting
Corallinaceae algae; further to the north: Corallinaceae algae, Corallina,
Ulva and chitons. Rock pools: Corallina, Ulva, Sargassum
and Cystophora. Hormosira,
Enderachne and Enteromorpha
but less common. Kelp occurs in the lower intertidal areas. Subtidal habitats: kelp (Ecklonia radiata) forest, turfing algae assemblages and Lithothamnion (encrusting Corallinaceae algae) pavement (Laxton & Laxton 1983, 1988c). In deeper water the algal assemblages existed in competition with sponges, ascidians and other sedentary animals. |
